There are two species of giant Koompasia bean (legume) trees growing in the Ulu Temburong forests. Koompasia excelsa and Koompasia malccensis. Both species can be seen from the Belalong Canopy Walkway and both are illustrated on this website. With experience it is easy to tell them apart. The Koompasia excelsa tree illustrated above grows next to the Ulu Ulu Resort on the Temburong River 45 minutes walk from the Belalong Canopy Walkway.
A fallen twig showing the tiny leaves of Koompasia excelsa . Koompasia malaccensis has leaves three times the size. However Koompasia excelsa grows to twice the height c. 80m whilst Koompasia malaccensis is a normal large canopy tree which grows to c. 40m
